    Church History

About 65 years ago, back in the 1940s, our church was formed on a street in Dallas called Lovers Lane. Since then, we have moved several blocks north of that original site—but retained the name “Lovers Lane.” We were once named after a street in Dallas, but now we are named after the greatest lover there ever was—Jesus Christ. Our church tries to live into our name. Our mission statement is to love people into relationship with Jesus Christ and we involve people in this quest to love everyone. We are not a perfect people, but we are a congregation who knows how to love.

On any given Sunday in our church, you will find people who have immigrated from nations in Africa and Central America. You will find people who have come to us because they first experienced our ministry in a prison in the state of Texas. You will find families who are here because they have a special needs child or one member of the family is deaf. We are not a congregation that seeks to mimic churches around us or suburban churches—but we are a church that is regional in nature. We are attractive to people because we are extremely diverse. We are here for all people—there are no qualifiers when we say, “You Are Welcome.”

We hope that you will find your place in the Lovers Lane story as we continue to grow as disciples of Jesus Christ and love all people into relationship with him.

    Archives and History Ministry Team

The Archives and History Ministry Team gathers, preserves, and publicizes the records and historical materials that give evidence of what God has done through the life and mission of Lovers Lane United Methodist Church. The church archive is a unique and historical memory bank, recording how Christ has led this congregation. It gives evidence of how many people have interacted in all areas of mission, outreach and evangelism. Materials of enduring historical value are collected and maintained by a team of volunteers.

Archive documents include records gathered from Charge Conference, the Administrative Board, Foundation Reports, church Committees and Commissions, Baptism and Membership Records, Building Records and Drawings, Newspapers, photos, paintings, classes, Church Directories, memoirs, audio-visuals, audio tapes CDs and DVDs; oral histories and documentaries of many kinds – which form our church heritage.

Each fall, the “Heritage Awards” are presented to honor those members who have made outstanding contributions to the church, and to celebrate the church history and legacy. “The Heritage of Lovers Lane UMC,” a DVD produced by Tim Welch, is available from Archives & History.
